Using Vector Clip Art

One of the great things about using digital technology and the Internet is how easy it is to find artwork and vector clip art that you can use for digital scrapbooking, presentations, documents, or to print and use in traditional paper projects.

However it is important to know the different types of clip art that are available, with most clipart sites being filled with old scanned artwork that isn’t very attractive. In fact a Google search for free clipart is likely to find dozens of sites filled with black and white drawings from the 1970s that was scanned and uploaded. Unfortunately this type of image isn’t easy to adjust the size or manipulate.

The best option is to search for sites that provide the original vector image, or a high resolution bitmap, and then use software like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator to resize or manipulate the image into your digital scrapbook, or before you print it. If you are on a budget, you can also use free image editors such as Inkscape or the Gimp, although there is also a lot of mid priced software available as shareware.

Vector art is very different from bitmap art which is a photo or an image that can’t be resized. Vector by contrast is made up of lines and points, so the program you use to edit it can change its size without getting jagged edges or making the artwork fuzzy. This is especially important if you’re creating flyers and posters and want different sizes.

Some designers actually make their available online in its original format, so that you can download it and make some changes, as well as resize it, though most will only supply a high resolution version that can be used up to a certain size poster. A Google search for.svg clip art will give you vector art you can use in Inkscape, and in fact some of it is exceptional.

Inkscape is also widely used by a lot of people, many of whom have created tutorials showing you how to use the software, and that makes it even easier to download a piece of vector clip art and use it in your project.
